A look inside Mariner IQ.

Earning a captain's licence is one of those goals people work toward for years. The prep options, on the other hand, can feel like a flea market: scattered, uneven, and rarely clear about where their questions came from.

Mariner IQ is the calmer alternative. It is built from the Coast Guard's own sample exams, covering credentials from the six-pack and the 100-ton master to able seaman and more.

The source is the Coast Guard

We start from what the Coast Guard publishes and keep every official question exactly as written, with the official answer. Nothing is reworded to make it easier or to make it ours.

Plain English at sea

Maritime language is dense on purpose, and it is easy to nod along without really understanding it. Every answer in Mariner IQ comes with an explanation in plain English, so the rules of the road and the logic of navigation make sense the first time you read them.

Maritime language is dense on purpose. The explanation should not be.

Made for the wheelhouse

There is even a bridge-red night mode, a screen that keeps your night vision intact for study sessions on the water after dark.

Who it is for

Mariner IQ is for people taking a Coast Guard licence exam: charter and fishing captains going for their first six-pack licence, mariners upgrading to a 100-ton master, deck officers and towing vessel mates, and the engineers, able seamen and lifeboatmen who keep vessels moving.

What is inside

Seventeen exams, from the six-pack and 100-ton master to towing vessel master, designated duty engineer and the QMED ratings. Question banks are large: the six-pack exam is 160 questions on test day, the 100-ton master exam is 210, and towing vessel master and mate is 260. Every exam has a 70 percent passing score and its own timed practice test.
